In order to follow up on the reappraisal of Germany's colonial past, as mandated in the coalition agreement, and to take a self-critical look at its own institutions, the Federal Foreign Office has supported the work of an international research team. In the volume ‘Das Auswärtige Amt und die Kolonien.Geschichte, Erinnerung, Erbe' (=The Federal Foreign Office and the Colonies: History, Memory, Legacy)’, which was initiated in 2021, they examine the role of the Federal Foreign Office, whose former Colonial Department was directly responsible for German rule in Africa, Asia and Oceania from 1890 to 1907 and from which the Imperial Colonial Office emerged in 1907.
On 5 June 2024, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock invited to the presentation and discussion of the thematic volume in the Europasaal, moderated by Prasanna Oommen . Together with curator at the Tanzanian National Museum in Dar es Salaam Flower Manase, editor and historian Brigitte Reinwald, filmmaker, sub-project leader Dekoloniale Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard and Federal Minister Annalena Baerbock , Prasanna Oommen spoke about connecting lines in the present of the regions of origin and in the present of post-migrant society in the Federal Republic of Germany and took a look into the future in the context of German colonial history.
