Diversity Hosting Panel Discussion Participation

Moderation of the panel discussion "Geschichte in Vielfalt" ("History in Diversity")

Migration is a global, European and German reality. For an immigration society that excludes no one, ensures democratic participation and guarantees peaceful coexistence in diversity, it is of central importance to understand and remember migration as part of its own history. However, the stories of migrants and their descendants are still often ignored or limited in their access.

This makes the current efforts to give migration history its permanent place in the culture of remembrance and to open up perspectives even more important. But how should this history be remembered and represented in museums? How can a multi-perspective image of history be created? What are the chances of integrating immigration into the culture of remembrance? What does this mean for our democracy?

These were the questions that Prasanna Oommen discussed at a panel discussion organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation on October 25, 2022 on the topic of „Geschichte in Vieltfalt – Erinnerungskultur im Einwanderungsland Deutschland“ at the Bürgerzentrum Ehrenfeld with the following guests:

  • Sanae Abdi (Member of the German Bundestag)
  • Laura Cwiertnia (Writer and journalist (Die ZEIT))
  • Dr. Robert Fuchs (Director of the Dokumentationszentrum und Museum über die Migration in Deutschland e.V. (DOMiD))
  • Ahmet Necati Sezer (Integrationsbeauftragten der Stadt Gronau und Mitbegründer von DOMiD)
  • Dr. Stefan Zeppenfeld (Historian)
